Intrigues Behind Appointment of Bomet Speaker to Be DG

3 min read

Appointment of Bomet County Assembly speaker Mr. David Shadrack Rotich to be the next County Deputy Governor got residents by surprise, but to those proximal, to county politics, can tell all the reasons behind this least expected move.

It was in this afternoon when the speaker went to the Governor’s office to pick the name of the appointee to be tabled on the floor of the house as expected by the law and when he opened it, he found himself to be the Deputy Governor Nominee, though he knew the deal.

Rotich’s appointment has trashed the hopes of former Chepalungu MP Paul Bii and former Woman Rep Cecilia Ngetich, who had spent some money and efforts to lobby for the post.

The new DG is a resident of Ndanai ward, and according to some members of the public is a strange figure that doesn’t show up in public functions like his counterparts from other counties.

Sources from County Kitchen Cabinet, the Chepchabas MCA Wesly Kiprotich who is the current Deputy Speaker has been fronted to take over the seat paving way for a by-election in his ward.

Rotich is a gullible man who cannot stand faceoff with rivals. While at the county assembly, he bowed down to incessant demands of MCAs which include allowances and this rare character made him a darling to all MCAs.

“The speaker has been pending to the will of MCAs, when confronted he just says yes yes, so the MCAs feel comfortable to have him at the executive so as to help them get favours at the Governor’s office,” our source said

On the other hand, Barchok who is still new in the office is afraid of rebellion from MCAs knowing that Rotich enjoys a massive backing of MCAs, he decided to have him as his deputy.

Ndaraweta MCA Josphat Kirui (majority leader) together with the speaker and the deputy sealed the appointment and replacement deal with the governor.

Though Rotich, hails from Sotik Sub County where the late Governor hailed from, many expected a female person to get the seat for the sake of gender balance and preferably from Laboso family.

However, those who are eying to take over the seat come 2022, combination of Barchok and Rotich is a work-over, considering that the two are green in politics, cowards with no roots at the grassroots as well as having no blessing from the national politics.

It is also hinted that regional leaders allied to DP Ruto, did not want to interfere with the process and therefore gave Barchok an open window to run his government as he wishes.

Since he took over the leadership, all the leaders who had promised to back him (Barchok) among them Ronald Tonui, Joyce Korir, Senator Christopher Langat have already shown displeasure with his leadership style.

We expect mixed reactions from local leaders and residents on the appointment and we will be bringing you updates as they come.
