The Agriculture Cabinet secretary Mwangi Kiunjuri in an emotional statement he issued at Serena Hotel Nairobi moments after he was fired welcomed is sacking and thanked the President for giving him a four-year chance to serve in his Cabinet.
“President Kenyatta remains my good friend and though the axe did not find me as a surprise, I thank him for giving me a chance for 4 years. I will keep our friendship” he said
While noting that his axe was not a result of poor performance, said, while addressing the nation Uhuru said Agriculture has done well in service delivery as well as productivity.
He further assured Kenyans that he is much around to continue his political career that started twenty-five years ago.
“As I go home, I will not provoke anybody, I will keep the oath of the office. For now I have not said, anything but I will still speak my minds when they will speak” he said
Kiunjuri said, though his Cabinet job is over, he is glad that to start something else “ When a cooking stick break is not the end of cooking”
The x-CS told the media, that he has kept faith even amidst the thick and thin, “I have gone through ups and downs but I am grateful to God that I came out with good health. I also want to thank my wife and my children for standing with me. They have been supporting and encouraging me”
“As you know me, I am principled and unbowed. So nobody will speak anything on my behalf. We have put in place modalities and strategies and I thank and I urge Munya to continue them as he takes over” he said
In October last year, the fierce Kiunjuri convened a presser attended by over 40 MPs allied to Deputy President William Ruto where he dared to be fired keeping that he wouldn’t change his stand of being close to DP Ruto.
Kiunjuri had earlier protested that he was not invited to attend an event where BBI report submitted to the President in Statehouse in November.
Most recently, while attending the funeral of Mathira MP Rigathi Gachagua’s mother, Kiunjuri threw his weight behind DP Ruto, maintaining that Central Kenya was fully behind DP Ruto’s presidential bid an incident that insiders say it didn’t go well with Uhuru who is planning to succeed himself.
Kinjuri is a seasoned politician who was elected to the parliament representing Laikipia East in 1997 on Democratic Party and in 2002 retained the seat and was appointed as the assistant minister of Water and Irrigation and the assistant minister for energy.
After Ann Waiguru’s resignation, he became the cabinet secretary for Devolution and Planning in 2015.
And when Jubilee was re-elected in 2017, the Moi University graduate was appointed the Cabinet Secretary for Agriculture.
